Black Eyed Pea

We’ve searched quite a bit, but still haven’t found a decent cafeteria-style restaurant in all of Colorado Springs, yet.

Sometimes we just want a meal of a few veggie side dishes, prepared simply, without a lot of fancy processing. We really miss our K&W Cafeterias back East.

But we’ve discovered that Black Eyed Pea (yes, the big chain restaurant) can fill that void.
Their “veggie plate” is your choice of 5 sides; and they have quite a few options to choose from. Still not exactly “health food”, but much more “whole foods” than your average restaurant.

You also get a nice yeast roll and small cornbread muffin with your order.
Easy to be vegetarian at a place like this. To be vegan here, however, would likely take quite a bit of work.

Update: 11/2/2018

We’ve visited this location three times in the last 3 months, and each time was slightly more disappointing than the previous.
Our latest notes are:

  1. Careful ordering the cornbread dressing: ask for “no gravy” since otherwise you’ll get bits of dead turkey floating on it.
  2. Don’t bother ordering their signature Black Eyed Peas or the Red Beans & Rice, as both have ham in them.
  3. They no longer have Corn Fritters. The Fried Corn is a disappointing half corn on the cob.
  4. The Glazed Carrots, Baked Sweet Potato, and Cooked Spinach are not very good.

There are still a number of veggie options for their 5-sides veggie plate, but few are truly good.
Due to the decline of their offerings, it’ll likely be quite a while before we try visiting again.
